Croatia is a country located in the south central part of Europe. It shares borders with Slovenia and Hungary to the north and faces the Adriatic Sea to the west. The coastal city of Split, located in the southern part of the country, has been known to be a center of its culture. In fact, its historic center has been designated as UNESCO World Heritage site. Its most prominent structure is Diocletian’s Palace, built in third century AD. The palace is made of limestone and marble, meant for the retirement of Emperor Diocletian.
Another notable city in Croatia is Dubrovnik, located further south of Split. Like the aforementioned city, its historic center is also included in the UNESCO World Heritage list. Among its notable structures are the Sponza Palace, the St. Saviour Church, and the St. Blaise’s Church. The city also features a 2 kilometer long wall that was meant to protect the city in the past. Visitors can climb into the top of its several turrets and towers for breathtaking views of the city and the coastline.
Croatia is also well-known for its beautiful national parks and one of the most notable is the Plitvice Lakes National Park. This heavily forested area is home to a wide variety of plant and animal species. It is also home to numerous bird species, making it ideal for bird watching.
In the city of Poreč is the Euphrasian Basilica, which is actually a complex of buildings composed of the basilica, a sacristy, the bell tower, and a baptistery. The complex serves as a fine example of Byzantine style of architecture. It is also designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The present basilica was dedicated to the Virgin Mary and was built in 553 to replace a much older structure. The interior features beautiful mosaics on the walls and on the floor. One of its chapels houses the relics of Saints Maurus and Eleutherius.
Another interesting destination in Croatia is the city of Trogir, which is also an island located between the mainland and Čiovo. Though small in area, this city has a large concentration of historic structures such as churches, towers, and palaces. For this, the historic center of the city has also been inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage list. Examples of Romanesque, Gothic, Baroque, and Renaissance architectures are quite abundant in this island city.
Different parts of Croatia experience varying temperature, depending on a particular area’s geographical features. The coastal towns and cities of the country experience mild winters and hot summers, ideal for those seeking to spend their vacations in beach resorts. Unfortunately, winter in this coastal part of Croatia is also described as wet, with rainstorms occurring frequently. As one travels north along the Adriatic coast, the weather also gets cooler, even bitterly so. This is also the conditions inland, especially in winter. Mountainous regions of the country also get heavy blankets of snow and are popular destinations for ski holidays. During summer, rainfall is expected to occur frequently. Further east, summer also tends to be hot and winter can also get cold, though fewer rain showers occur.
