Mlin

Mlini is a small village located in a greater area known as Zupa Dubrovacka, located several kilometers southeast of Dubrovnik. The place-name means ‘mills,’ due to the presence of a number of water mills in the area in the past.

For those looking to spend their holidays in a serene and quiet atmosphere, this fishing village is the ideal destination.

Located just a short ride from Dubrovnik, the village faces a beautiful harbor and is protected by the mountain Spilan.

Mlini is blessed with a several brooks with small falls, providing lush and serene pockets of small places to enjoy nature. Most of these brooks are home to several species of water fowl, particularly ducks. These animals have become integral to the charm of the village, making this avian species an attraction in itself.

Mlini is also known for its beautiful beaches, where visitors can soak up in the area’s plentiful sunshine and friendly atmosphere. A lot of cafes lined up the area along the promenade fronting the Bay of Zupa, providing respite and cool refreshments to visitors and locals alike.

Apart from enjoying the beach, active individuals can also try snorkeling, where the relatively untouched coastline offers interesting underwater sights and myriad of marine animals.

Another interesting feature near Mlini is the presence of a nudist beach, which is located in its neighboring resort, the Srebreno. A five-minute ride from the village will take visitors to this area. Scuba diving is also a popular sport that visitors can indulge in.

Other areas that visitors can explore are the numerous olive groves, fruit orchards, and forested areas within and around Mlini. A walk behind the beach will lead to one of the most beautiful pastoral scene in the area, a small stone bridge crossing a rivulet of stream with flowers blooming all around. A mill stone is located nearby, a memorial to the milling industry that used to dominate the area.

Another attraction in the village is the Church of St. Hilarius, which was built in the 15th century. St. Hilarius is the patron saint of Mlini, whom the locals believed to have slain the dragon of Epidaurum right on the beach.

The Chapel of St. Roch is also located within the village and is also worth a visit.

Located a short distance outside of the village are the remains of a Roman settlement, complete with ruins of buildings.

Mlini is also a short distance away from another popular tourist destination in the area, the town of Cavtat which is accessible through a local bus service that pass through the village every half an hour.

Eating Out

There are several eating establishments providing varied dining options for visitors and locals. The Mediterranean climate enjoyed in Mlini makes it possible for restaurant patrons to dine out in the open and enjoy the congenial atmosphere of the village.

The Konoba Astarea specializes on local and international dishes and caters mainly to tourists. The à la carte restaurant of Hotel Mlini offers both seafood and meat dishes while Konoba Marinero serves traditional Dalmatian cuisine. Most of the restaurants in the area have terraces where visitors can enjoy the view of the harbor while they dine.

For lighter fare, visitors can head out to the Snack bar Studenac, which serves traditional grilled food right on the beach, perfect for those wishing to dine under the stars and with the fresh ocean breeze.
