Slano

Slano is a small village located in the southern part of Croatia, several kilometers northwest of Dubrovnik. It faces the Banja cove and has fishing as one of its major industries. A lot of small boats and yachts are also anchored in the cove in any given time of the year. Furthermore, its beautiful natural surroundings and friendly locals have made Slano one of the ideal vacation destinations in the area.

Sights & Activities

Slano have been settled by humans since the prehistoric period. This is evidenced by the presence of ruins of a fort and burial mounds in the hills near the village. There are also signs that the Romans once occupied the area where the village lay. A sarcophagus that was dated to be from the 5th century BC is now on display at the Franciscan monastery, a structure that bears witness to the history of this particular village. Along with its church, the monastery was built in the 14th century and is a good destination for those who wish to know more about the religious history of Slano. Inside the church, visitors should take note of one item located in its main altar, the beautiful polyptych made by Lovro Dobričević.

Another religious structure, the St. Blaise’s church, was built in the 15th century and is the main church of the village. It is constructed in Baroque style, typical of churches in the area. Walking along the paved paths and streets of the area will also bring visitors to several small churches and chapels scattered within and around Slano. In the nearby Banja are two churches that were built in the 13th century, one dedicated to the Annunciation and one to St. Peter.

Other structures worth noting in Slano are the vice-rector’s palace and the Ohmučević summer residence, which was constructed in the 18th century.

The beaches of Slano are quite beautiful, with clear water and gently blowing breeze. It is perfect for those seeking to spend their holidays in idyllic setting. Most resorts in the area offer the chance for guests to go snorkeling and see different marine creatures that call the cove home. Scuba diving trips may also be enjoyed. Boats can also be chartered by those who wish to go sailing or fishing. As an added bonus, those who visit Slano during non-tourist seasons may enjoy virtual privacy and seclusion.

The city of Dubrovnik is accessible through the regular bus service that passes through the village several times in a day.
