Osijek

Osijek is a large city located on the banks of the Drava River, within the Slavonia region of Croatia. It is also considered as the economic center of the eastern part of the country, though most visitors often come to the city for its rich heritage and pleasant riverside surroundings.

Sights & Activities

Visitors to this city will not miss the Church of St. Peter and St. Paul, which features a tower that is the second highest in the country. Built in the 19th century, this massive structure is of Neo-Gothic style and contains beautiful stained glass windows, though some had been damaged during the war in the 1990s. Despite its size, the structure is still considered a parish church and not a cathedral.

Another historic landmark of the city is the Croatian National Theatre, a Moorish style building that was also constructed in the 19th century. It is a known venue of operas and drama plays. The like the Church of St. Peter and St. Paul, parts of the theater have been renovation following the war in the 1990s.

Art lovers can head out to the Gallery of Fine Arts, located along Europska avenija, and view the numerous paintings showcased in this institution. The gallery is housed within a beautiful mansion and also displays the works of notable Croatian sculptors. Several art exhibits are also held in this gallery the whole year through.

On the other hand, the Osijek Museim of Slavonia is located within the old Town Hall, on the city’s main square. It displays items related to the history of the region, some of them dating back as early as the Bronze Age. Included in its collections are coins, costumes, statues, pottery, and textiles. The museum is worth exploring by those curious of the area’s local history.

Strolling along the older parts of the city allows visitors to view some Baroque residential structures that have been lovingly preserved to enhance the city’s rich heritage.

Another place ideal for strolling is the promenade along the Drava river, lined with numerous trees that provide ample shade to visitors.

The Drava river itself is also popular among fishing and hunting enthusiasts and much had derived much pleasure in indulging in these sports.

There are also several parks in Osijek that visitors and locals head out to to enjoy the wonderful outdoors. Such are the Municipal Park of King Petar Kresimir IV and the King Tomislav Park, both designated as horticultural monuments.

Osijek also boasts of its own recreation and sporting facility, the Copacabana. It is located on the left bank of the river and features swimming pools and the beach for water sports. There are also facilities for football, basketball, tennis, and handball.

Every May, the city holds its annual Tambora Music Festival that is well attended by tambura orchestras from all over the country. The culture of the city is celebrated during the Osijek Summer Nights, with open air performances and fairs.

Weather

The residents of Osijek enjoys mild continental climate highlighted with hot summers and cold winters. Snow is also experienced during winter. The best time to visit Osijek is during spring, when the whole city is infused with renewed enthusiasm and the surrounding areas explode in a riot of natural colors.
