Birmingham

Birmingham is a city located in the West Midlands county of England. It is recognized for its commercial importance to the country though the city still possesses some interesting and distinctive attractions of its own.

Sights & Activities

Visitors who come with their families to Birmingham should head out to the National Sea Life Centre in Brindleyplace. This establishment exhibits numerous species of marine and freshwater creatures that will surely provide hours of enjoyment to each visitor. Among the animals on display are sea turtles, reef sharks, Japanese spider crabs, sting rays, and otters. Most of these animals can be observed through the underwater tunnel. The centre is also recognized for its excellent breeding program for seahorses.

Another attraction that is worth exploring is the Winterbourne Botanic Garden in Edgbaston. For a small fee, visitors can gain entrance to the garden and view its interesting features such as an orchid house, an arboretum, a glasshouse, and a sunken garden.

Adjacent to the garden is the Edgbaston Pool, which is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest. It is composed of a large lake and woodland.

North of Winterbourne is another garden of the same kind. The Birmingham Botanical Gardens is described to closely resemble a Victorian public park. It opened in 1832 and is a popular outdoor destination, being open to the public the whole year through.

Chocolate lovers will surely enjoy their visit to Birmingham, being where the Cadbury World is located. Situated in Bournville, this attraction is managed by the well-known chocolate maker, Cadbury. The attraction showcases several exhibits on the history of chocolate making and on the company itself. Samples are also available for visitors, who can also make use of a play area and picnic area within the premises. Highlights of the visit include rides for small children, participation in the interactive Purple Planet exhibit, and viewing the items displayed at the Cadbury Collection.

Another interesting attraction within the city is the Birmingham Walk of Stars, similar to the one found in Hollywood in California. Names of performers who appeared in several of the city’s major concert and performance venues are added to the pavement. Also included are the names of residents who contributed much to the city.

Visitors should also take the time to head out to Victoria Square, considered to be the centre of the city and is where the Town Hall and the Council House are located. Items to look out for include public artworks and sculptures. The park is also the venue of a Frankfurt market that is held every Christmas.

Those who wish to know about the local history should visit the Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery located on the edge of the Chamberlain Square. Another interesting destination would be the Museum of the Jewllery Quarter in Hockley, which details the history of jewelry making in the city.

Notable social events in Birmingham include the ArtsFest, which is organized every September. During this celebration, visitors and locals are treated to several dance, music, and theatre performances in several venues. The annual Birmingham Pride is another huge event organized in the city. It features a carnival parade, amusement rides, markets, fairs, and other entertainment activities.

Weather

Like the rest of the country, Birmingham enjoys a mild temperate climate. January is considered the coldest month while July is the hottest. To better appreciate its outdoor attractions, visitors should visit Birmingham during late spring or early autumn, when the weather gets comfortable enough for leisurely walks. Though the city experiences mild winter, snow is still expected to occur especially in the months of January and February.
