North West London is designated the area northwest of Central London. Though this extensive suburban area is mainly residential, there are still several attractions worth visiting.
Brent Cross, along Prince Charles Drive, is a shopping centre that was opened in 1976. During that time, it was considered the first shopping centre of its kind that quickly experienced rapid popularity and growth. It was one of the settings of the James Bond film ‘Tomorrow Never Dies.’
Another modern attraction in North West London is the Wembley Arena, along the Empire Way in Wembley. The arena is known venue for entertainment and performance arts. In front of the arena is the ‘Square of Fame’ that bears plaques with names and handprints of artists who performed there. Across it is the Wembley Stadium, a large football stadium that occasionally plays venue to concerts.
In Hampstead is the Fenton House, a historic residential structure built in the 17th century. Situated along Hampstead Grove, it is now owned and maintained by the National Trust. Inside the house is a collection of keyboard instruments, antique furniture, and paintings. Surrounding the house, visitors can enjoy its rose garden and orchard.
Another historic structure worth visiting is located on 6 Ellerdale Road, also in Hampstead. This fine example of Arts and Craft movement structure was completed in 1876 and now houses the Institute of St. Marcellina, a convent.
There is no lack of outdoor spaces in West London and one of them is the Parliament Hill, where beautiful views of Central London can be had. It is also a popular destination for kite flying, leading a part of it to be informally known as Kite Hill.
Located adjacent to Parliament Hill is the Hampstead Heath, considered to be the city’s largest ancient parkland. On its northern part sits the Kenwood House which is maintained by the English Heritage. It was built in the 17th century and is open to the public. It is surrounded by woodlands that comprise the greater part of the heath. Some parts of the woodland are designated Site of Special Scientific Interest. Popular activities done in the heath are walking and swimming, with several public swimming ponds for public use. On the western part of the heath is the Golders Hill Park, a large grassed area that features a flower garden and a duck pond. A small zoo is also located within the park, housing animals such as alpacas and red-legged seriemas. There are also several tennis courts and a putting green open for public use.
Another good destination for outdoor recreation is the Queen’s Park in Kilburn. It features an animal farm, children’s playground, a garden, putting green, and several tennis courts.
Though the number of dining establishments in North West London is not as many as those located closer to Central London, there are still several outstanding restaurants in the area. One is the Spanish restaurant on Pinner Green, the La Giralda. There are also several Indian restaurants in North West London, particularly in Harrow. Examples of which are the Papa J’s on Peel Road, the Curry Mahal on Northolt Road, and the Lahore along Station Road. Italian meals can be had at Sorrentina on Manor Parade while those yearning for more exotic fares can head out to Kimchee on Finchley Road, which serves Korean dishes, and the Local Friends Chinese Restaurant on North End Road.
There are also several pubs and bars in the area, including the Club 113 on Golders Green Road, The Lower Ground Bar on West End Lane, and The Green on Walm Lane.
