Sights & Activities

Trocadéro bears the official name of the place du Trocadéro et du Novembre, though most locals call the area the Place du Trocadéro. Its most prominent landmark is the Palais de Chaillot, a structure that replaced the old palace and was built in time for the Exposition Internationale of 1937. The present structure is actually composed of two independent wings that house several museums. These include the Musée national de la Marine or the National Naval Museum, the Musée de l’Homme or the Museum of Man, and the Musée national des Monuments français. Visitors can accessed this landmark through the Trocadéro station of Paris Metro. In front of the palace and facing the Tour Eiffel is an extensive and well-tended garden, the Jardins du Trocadéro, which features a large pond and fountain set in the middle part.

On the western end of the Trocadéro is the Passy cemetery, established in the 19th century and the resting place of several well known French personage.
Tour Eiffel is the iron tower that was built in 1889 and was named after its designer Gustav Eiffel. Most visitors of the city take the time to climb up to the top of the tower, either by climbing the stairs or using a lift. The tower affords spectacular 360° view of Paris. It is situated at the northwestern end of Champ de Mars, a large public space that is used as an outdoor destination. Even at nighttime, locals and visitors flock to this park to view the light show put on by the Tour Eiffel.

On the western end of the 16th arrondissement is the public park called the Bois de Boulogne. It is also associated with the city’s red light districts. The park was established in the site of the ancient forest called the Boulogne Woods. In the northern part of the park is the Château de Bagatelle, a Neo-Classical building set in a well-maintained garden that is the venue of the annual Concours international de roses nouvelles de Bagatelle, a competition held every June that introduces new varieties of roses from all over the world. Nearby is the Jardein d’Acclimatation, a historic amusement park established in 1860. Apart from the usual amusement rides, the park also features a small zoo. In the southwestern part of the park is the Longchamp Racecourse that is the venue of the annual Prix de ‘Arc de Triomphe every October.
