Germany is the home country of famed composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and for the last 85 years, it holds its Mozart Festival. Most of the events are celebrated in the Würzburg Residenz and numerous renowned musicians take part of the festival. Works of other famous composers from Germany and other countries are also featured.

For those who wish to behold some of the architectural marvels of the country, a visit to the Cologne Cathedral is a must. This fine example of Gothic architecture is located on the banks of the river Rhine and is the most revered religious landmark of the city. Highlights of its interiors include the hundred pillars supporting vaulted ceilings and the beautiful stained glass windows. The cathedral also houses the Shrine of the Three Magi, containing the relics of the Three Wise Men. Visitors can also climb to the South Tower where magnificent views of the surrounding areas await.

Another spectacular structure is the Neuschwanstein Castle in Füssen, considered to most resemble a fairy tale castle. It is of Neo-Gothic design and is set is the lush background of the alpine forest of the area. It was built by King Ludwig II and used to be the summer residence of royalty.

In the capital Berlin, the Brandenburg Castle is one of its famous landmarks. It became a symbol of German unity after the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. The gate to the castle is topped by a bronze sculpture depicting the goddess of victory riding a chariot driven by four horses. The castle has evolved into a popular venue for festivals and other social events.

Visitors can also head out to the beautiful islands of Mainau and Reichenau located on the Lake Constance. The former is known for its beautiful parks and gardens filled with colorful flowers. This earned the island the moniker `island of flowers.’ On the other hand, Reichenau is home to the Reichenau Abbey, designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Numerous royal families have commissioned palaces and summer residences in the suburb of Potsdam in Berlin, along the banks of the Havel River. The most famous structure in the area is the Sanssouci Palace, a building constructed in a combination of baroque and rococo styles. Other impressive palaces in the area are the New Palace, the Charlottenhof Palace, the Cecilienhof House, and the Marble Palace. There are five extensive parks in Potsdam that provide scenic backdrops to these magnificent structures.

Visitors should also take the time to head out to Sassnitz to view the white chalk cliffs located along the coast of the Jasmund peninsula. The sight of these impressive geological landmarks rising from the turquoise sea are both beautiful and awe inspiring.

The Church of Our Lady located in Dresden is a baroque structure that is situated along the river Elbe. Its most notable features include the painted balustrades and chancel, as well as its stone dome. The church has undergone recent reconstruction after being bombed in 1945.

There is still another popular destination in Germany that is worth a visit by anyone interested in its culture. The town of Bamberg is also designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site because of its numerous historic buildings. A walk along the narrow streets of this town will let visitors behold beautiful palaces, ornate churches, and mansions that manifested the impressive history and cultural significance of Bamberg.

Weather

Most of Germany enjoys a temperate climate, though the geographic location of a particular area also influences slight variations. The northern parts of Germany generally enjoy mild winters and cool summers, though rain is expected to occur all throughout the year with highest frequency during summers. The eastern part is considered to be of more continental climate, with cold winters and warm summers. Rain occurs less frequently in this area. The central and southern parts of Germany have the tendency to experience either of the two weather variations. Visitors often come to this country during the months of May to September, when sunshine is generally abundant.
