Sights & Activities

A visit to Greece and the city of Athens will not be complete without stopping by the Parthenon, the ruins of a temple dedicated to the goddess Athena. Located in the hill called the Acropolis, Parthenon is an example of a Doric-style of architecture. Long after worship of the goddess waned, the structure was used as a church, a mosque, and a munitions depot during Turkish occupation in the past. Around the Parthenon are ruins of several structures that indicate the sacred history of the area during the ancient times.

Also located in Athens is the National Archaeological Museum which showcases extensive collections of artworks, sculptures, artifacts, and other priceless items. Visitors can purchase official reproductions of these items from the museum’s gift shop. The museum itself is housed in a 19th century structure that contains vast galleries as well as a photographic archives and a library.

Visitors can also head over to Cape Sounion in Attica to behold the Temple of Poseidon. Though it no longer contains the statue of the god, it is still a famous destination because of its spectacular views of the sea and of sunsets. First-time travelers to the area need to be aware, though, of the steep climb awaiting them before reaching the temple.

The Palace of Knossos is also another popular tourist destination in Greece. Identified to be from the 20th century BC, it is the ruins of a labyrinthine structure and is surrounded by smaller structures such as the Little Palace, the Royal Villa, the House of the Frescoes, the Caravanserai, the Temple Tomb, among others. Located in Crete, is also near the Heraklion Archaeological Museum.

If you are looking for vibrant nightlife and is looking forward to do some shopping, head out to the island of Mykonos to enjoy its sophisticated atmosphere. It is one destination in which visitors of different nationalities will feel right at home. There are also several nude beaches located in this island.

Other attractions you shouldn’t miss include the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus–where the Epidaurus Festival is held every summer and the fortress of Mycenae.

The island of Hydra is explored by means of walking or riding a bicycle, as motor vehicles are prohibited in all parts of the island. Just like in Mykonos, there are also several nude beaches in the area.

Weather

Greece enjoys a predominantly Mediterranean climate, with slight variations in several localities due to its geographic locations. In islands of the Aegean Sea, residents enjoy a dry Mediterranean weather, in which most summer days are sunny with low precipitation. During winter, rain occurs frequently with occasional snow. The low lying areas of Attica and Crete also experience this kind of weather.

Some parts of Greece, including its central part and in Macedonia, experience continental Mediterranean climate in which winter is harsh and cold with lots of snow. Summer is hot with frequent rain.

The mountainous parts of Greece experiences cool summers with thunderstorms and winters are mostly spent indoors due to thick blanket of snow.
