Monaco is a small sovereign state in Western Europe, situated along the northern coast of the Mediterranean Sea. Officially called the Principality of Monaco, it is headed by a monarch, the present of which is Prince Albert II. Next to the Vatican City, it is the second smallest independent state in the world. The principality is actually divided into four administrative areas–the Monte Carlo, Monaco-Ville, La Condamine, and Fontvieille. Click here for more info…

Sights & Activities

Monaco is known to be the most popular destination for those who wish to indulge in high-stake gaming. The Monte Carlo Casino is its largest gaming complex, housed within a Baroque building that caters exclusively to foreign visitors.

There are other sights and attractions to explore for those who wish to be more familiar with this popular holiday destination. Along Avenue Saint-Martin is the Oceanographic Museum & Aquarium. Few visitors will ever forget the façade of this impressive structure, as it seems to rise out of the sea. The institution is a repository of marine plants and animals collected since its inauguration in 1910. The aquarium is considered a good place to take the children to, with its numerous marine creatures on display. There is also a restaurant located at the top floor called the La Terrasse.

There is another unique attraction along Avenue Princesse-Grâce, the National Museum of Automatons and Doll of Yesteryear. The items displayed in the museum are all dressed in period costumes and are showcased with corresponding miniature furniture and accessories.

Visitors can also view the private stamp and coin collections of H.S.H. Prince Rainier III. Located along Terrasses de Fontvieille, it also displays a copperplate rotary press that was used in printing the principality’s stamps in the past.

As visitors wander around the streets of the old town, they should take the time to stop by the Wax Museum of the Princes of Monaco, located along Rue Basse. As the name suggests, this museum displays wax figures of royalty belonging to the Grimaldi dynasty. Most are depicted in period costumes in certain historical moments in the country’s past.

Another attraction of the old town is the Church of Mercy, situated at the Place de la Mairie. It was built in the 17th century and contains several religious art pieces, including a beautiful wood carving of Christ.

Those curious about the abode of Monaco’s royalty should head out to the Prince’s Palace along Place du Palais. For a small entrance fee, visitors can tour the richly adorned interiors of some its parts, such as the Throne Room, the Palatine Chapel, and the Sainte-Marie Tower.

The Monaco Cathedral is located along Rue Colonel Bellando, constructed on the site of a church that was dedicated to Saint Nicholas. It was built in 1875 and is the final resting place of Monaco’s former rulers. The cathedral is richly adorned with several artworks and is one attraction that should not be missed by any visitor.

Weather

One of the reasons why Monaco is a popular holiday destination in Europe is its pleasant Mediterranean climate. Summer is warm, with the hottest days occurring in July and August. It is also the time that this principality welcomes its highest number of visitors. Though Monaco is typically quiet during winter, the temperature rarely dips below freezing. Abundant sunshine is enjoyed all throughout the year, and spring and autumn are both described to be pleasant, with occasional rain showers.
