Barceloneta is a neighborhood in Barcelona, located within the district of Ciutat Vella. It was established during the 18th century as a relocation site for residents of the Ribera neighborhood. Once occupied by fishermen, it is now a fashionable though casual neighborhood that contains some of the finest beaches of the city.
The beaches in this neighborhood are popular tourist destinations during the summer season and can get crowded with locals and visitors who wish to enjoy the sun, warm waters, and vibrant atmosphere.
This area is quite accessible, located just a short walk from the Las Ramblas. Though some visitors are quite content to stroll along the boardwalk and enjoy the sea breeze, most can’t resist dipping into the Mediterranean Sea and indulge in several water sports. Among the popular activities done are sailing and wind surfing. Boats can also be hired for those who want to go fishing.
The numerous small streets in Barceloneta are also ideal for strolling. There are also several shops that sell souvenirs and items that might interest the numerous visitors who come back to the area year after year.
The biggest shopping establishment in the area is the Mare Magnum, which is also adjacent to the IMAX Theatre. When visitors wish to take a break from the sun and the heat, a visit to these establishments would provide respite and another form of entertainment.
Another interesting destination that is located near Barceloneta is the Museu Maritim, which details the maritime history of the city and focuses on the contribution of the harbor to the city’s growth and development through the centuries. The museum is located along Avinguda de les Drassanes.
Located in the nearby Port Vell is the L’Aquarium de Barcelona, designated as the largest marine aquarium in Europe. It opened in 1995 and is the most popular paid attraction for families in the city. Visitors of all ages will surely enjoy wandering around and getting familiarized with marine creatures that were collected in areas around the city and beyond.
East of the Barceloneta is the Vila Olimpica, an extensive sports complex constructed for the 1992 Olympic Games. It is open to the public who wish to explore the extensive grounds and use some of the sporting facilities.
There are numerous cafes and restaurants lining the waterfront of Barceloneta, leading to the development of a vibrant atmosphere where tourists converge to socialize, enjoy their stay in the area and sample some of the dishes offered.
Though a bit on the expensive side, the meals offered at the Andaira restaurant on Carrer de Vilajoiosa are well worth the price in terms of taste and the accompanying impeccable service. On the other hand, the El Suquet de l’Almirall is a known family-friendly restaurant that serves the freshest seafood. The La Piadina is another popular eating establishment that specializes on Italian cuisine.
Barceloneta also enjoys a vibrant nightlife due to the presence of several pubs and bars in the area, such as the Bar La Cepa, the Bar-bodega Jordi, the Simon, and the La Tasca del Barri.
