Sights & Activities

One of the towns within this region is Avenches, where the ruins of a Roman settlement can be explored. These include the amphitheatre, the ruins of Roman houses, and thermal baths. The amphitheatre is also the venue of an annual opera festival, a rock festival, and several other events. There is also a museum on site that features numerous artifacts, including a replica of the gold bust of Emperor Marcus Aurelius. There are also several historical Gothic and Renaissance style structures in the area, which houses most of the quaint shops and cafes catering to the crowd who stroll along its beautiful streets. The area around the town is home to several vineyards that visitors can head out to for some wine tasting.

In the nearby town of Payerne is a former Benedictine abbey that was established in the 10th century. The abbey church is considered the largest building in the country that was built in Romanesque architecture. Its highlights include several beautiful frescoes and columns that feature rich decorations.

The city of Laussane is the capital of Vaud, one of the cantons or states of the Switzerland. It is also a wonderful place to stroll in, with most of its streets closed to motor vehicles. The city’s cathedral is considered one of the finest examples of early Gothic architecture in the world. There are also several beautiful parks to wander around. The city is also home to the Olympic Committee and the Olympic Museum. Another interesting destination is the Musee de l’Art Brut, where artworks created by psychiatric patients and prisoners are showcased.

The village of Le Sentier should be in the itinerary of watch lovers as it is the location of the L’Espace Horloger, a museum on chronographs and on the watch-making industry. It also showcases repeating and luxury watches. Also located near the village is the Parc Jurassien Vaudois, an extensive forest of pine trees and home to the biggest ant colony in Europe.

The town of Montreux is one of the most scenic in the area, situated on the bay of Lake Geneva. It is also the site of an annual jazz festival which includes some outdoor performances. Visitors can take leisurely strolls along the lake promenade and admire some of the beautiful houses and buildings in the area. There are also several vineyards surrounding the town which may be accessed by hiking or riding a bike. Another popular attraction in the area is the Château de Chillon, a castle situated on a small island on the lake.

Another town located around the lake is Nyon, where several ruins of Roman structures are located. A castle was constructed in the town during the 13th century and now houses collections of valuable porcelain. Visitors can also head out to the Museum of Lake Geneva, where there are several aquariums, boat models, and a restored steamer on display.

Yverdon-les-Bains is a town famous for its thermal spa that is known for its therapeutic properties. It is also where the Grande Caricaie nature preserve is located, a popular destination for bird watching. Other interesting attractions include the House From Elsewhere science fiction museum, the Swiss Fashion Museum, and the Savoy Castle.

The weather in the area is influenced by the Lake Geneva, reducing the frequency of rainfall. Average winter temperature hovers just on the freezing point while summer months averages just at 18°C.
