Sights & Activities

The Baroque cathedral in the town of St. Gallen is one of its famous landmarks. Together with the Abbey precinct and the Abbey library, it is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The library contains more than a hundred thousand manuscripts that quite ancient and priceless. Visitors can also explore the Old Town, where there are several structures bearing beautiful oriel windows manufactured during the 16th to 18th centuries. Another good attraction in the town is the Textile Museum and library which features beautiful embroideries from all over the world, some of them dating back from the 14th century. Several festivals are also celebrated around town, such as the Children’s Festival, the Classic Music Festival, and the St. Gallen Festival.

The town is also located near Lake Constance, where there are several walking and biking trails available so visitors and locals can enjoy scenic views to the fullest. The lake is also ideal for boating, canoeing, kayaking, and even water skiing.

Those interested in knowing about yodeling and perhaps learn how to do it themselves should head out to the Appenzell district, considered to be the headquarters for this activity. It is also famous for its delicious baked goods, embroideries, and chocolate products. Visitors will also get the chance to see the area’s traditional costumes, as some locals choose to wear them most of the time.

The town of Stein-am-Rhein is one part of Switzerland in which its medieval culture is remarkably well-preserved. It is full of beautiful houses and pretty fountains that lend an irresistible charm to the place. The town is also the location of the St. George’s Abbey Museum, an establishment showcasing local art and history. The structure itself is quite remarkable, with rooms decorated with beautiful paneling and murals. Nearby is the Convent Church of St. George, a religious structure that bears parts dating back from the 12th century. Visitors can also take part in cruises across Lake Constance, where scenic views and opportunities for animal watching can be had.

There are also several vineyards and fruit orchards dotting the areas around the lake. Visitors can take day trips to these establishments for wine tasting and sampling.

Weather

Just like most of the parts of the country, Northeastern Switzerland experiences a temperate climate. Summer is the most ideal season to visit this region, where the beautiful countryside enjoys abundant sunshine to allow explorations and outdoor activities. The months of July and August also experience longer daylight hours and most evenings are spent outdoors under the clear skies. Rain, however, can occur any day so visitors should come prepared as they go exploring.

Winter is considered mild, with average temperature hovering just above freezing point. Frost may occur, though only for a short while. The month of January is considered the coldest of the year.
