On the bay of Lake Maggiore is the village of Ascona, which features its own promenade that is ideal for leisurely strolls. Quaint cafes line along this area, offering refreshments and cups of coffees to patrons. The village features its own art museum and the church of San Pietro e Pablo. Every June, the village comes alive with the International Festival of Street Artists while October is when the Ascona’s Chestnut Festival is also celebrated.

In the town of Bellinzona are three medieval castles that are considered as one UNESCO World Heritage site. Its fortifications are fine examples of defensive structures during that time. These castles are named Castelgrande, Castello di Montebello, and the Castello di Sasso Corbano, respectively. Another famous landmark is the Teatro Sociale, an Italian Classical building that was built in the 19th century. The town’s medieval heritage is celebrated during the Carnevale Rabadan Bellinzona, which is held with carnival, a masked procession, a masked ball, and street performances. During the holiday season, the town also organizes its Christmas market.

The Riviera del Gambarogno is also a popular tourist destination in Ticino, composed of quaint villages situated around Lake Locarno. One of its attractions is the Gambarogno Botanical Garden, where myriad flowering plants are cultivated and provide colorful sights. Visitors can also follow the numerous walking trails in the area, including those that allow exploration of the Bolle di Magadino nature preserve.

The city of Locarno is located on the northern tip of Lake Maggiore and is also a place where flowers bloom in abundance, especially in its numerous parks and other public spaces. When the weather is agreeable, such as during summer, people often head out to the Piazza Grande to witness open-air concerts or to take part in the International Film Festival that is organized during the month of August. One of the most prominent landmarks in the city is the church of Madonna del Sasso, a known destination for pilgrims from all over the country and from the world. Visitors should also take the time to head out to Castello Visconteo which features a grand tower and an archaeological museum containing interesting collections. A cable-car takes visitors to the Cardada-Cimetta mountain where there are numerous trails for hiking during summer and ski runs during winter. The nearby Lago Maggiore is also an ideal destination for swimming, boating, canoeing, and other water sports.
Locarno plays hosts to the International Film Festival every August while the Moon and Stars open-air festival is celebrated every July.

Visitors can also explore the numerous parks and gardens located all over the town of Lugano. It is also a favorite venue for art exhibits and events. Its most prominent religious landmark is the San Lorenzo Cathedral which is of Renaissance style. The Church of Santa Maria degli Angioli is also worth stopping by, with its beautiful frescoes made by prominent Renaissance artists.

Weather

Ticino enjoys a climate that can be described as Mediterranean, in contrast to the rest of the country. The summer and autumn months typically last longer, with early November still experiencing warm temperature. Winter rarely gets below freezing point, though weather conditions vary slightly as one goes into higher elevation. In the higher altitudes, there is perennial snow cover that makes the area ideal for skiing the whole year through.
